Obituary of Layne Burton Conrad

Layne Burton Conrad of Mansfield, PA, passed away on March 26, 2024 after suffering from lung cancer. Born February 7, 1938 to Lloyd and Charlotte Mehlenbacher Conrad. Layne grew up on the family farm in Cohocton, NY. While still in high school, Layne joined the Army Reserves and served 8 years. Layne's work included positions at Eastman Kodak, Farmers and Traders as well as Penn Mutual life insurance companies and Rene Heckler Office Machines dealership. Layne was blessed to have two wonderful marriages and families. The first to Betty Salisbury living 40 years in Spencerport, NY. At that time, Layne served at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rochester, NY as treasurer and proudly as Boy Scout and Order of the Arrow scoutmaster there. This union brought him his loved children, son Mark (Jeanmarie) Conrad and daughter Tammy (Calvin) Wickens. Layne got great love and joy from his five grandchildren, Madisson, Spencer, and Owen Wickens and Joshua and Tyler Conrad especially during summer adventures in the mountains and lakes of Pennsylvania. At retirement in 1999, Layne moved to Mansfield, PA to marry Ellie and become a loved member of the Hughes family. This union was full of travel, sun, beaches, dancing, cards, boating, and so much music. Layne is survived by his wife, Eleanor "Ellie"; children; grandchildren; brothers, Kevin (Shirley) of Yuba City, CA, Bradley (Sharon) of Bath, NY; sister, Regina Gilbert of New Britain, CT; brothers-in-law, Ray Hughes of Sayre, PA, Ivan (Wanda) Hughes of Stillwater, OK, Mark (Janice) Hughes of Wellsboro, PA, Charles Jackson of Tioga, PA, and Ron Earley of Corning, NY,sister-in-law Linda Hughes along with multiple loved nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends are left with fond memories of Uncle Layne/Laynester. Layne was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Alice Avery; wife, Betty, stepson Christopher Hoyt; brother, Neil; brothers-in-law, Glenn Hughes, and Russell Hughes; sister-in-law, Anita Jackson, as well as stepsister, Judy Johnson. Friends and family are invited to call on Monday, April 1, 2024 from 11am-1pm at Buckheit Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc. 637 S. Main St. Mansfield, PA. A funeral service will follow at 1pm with Pastor Robert "Bob" Briggs officiating. Burial will take place in Oakwood Cemetery in Mansfield, PA.
